Still Life notes

About one month ago I talked with Oren Tanzer who put me in touch with Betsy Smith at The Village at Mammoth. I told her my idea for an art show and she gave me the green light to use an un-leased space in the Village.

When I asked her what space we could use and she said, “take your pick” I was jumping for joy on the inside while I casually said “what about the old Unbound shop?”

She said yes. I called Dawn True, and Still Life with Snow was born.

Our next step was to see who would come on board for this show. Dawn and I had done a group art show several years back, and Chris Carnel was one of the only artists who sold almost every piece he submitted for the show. And it was obvious why. Not only is he a talented, known snowboard photographer – his photos spoke. They featured people we’ve grown to know and love through magazines and videos, and they captured once in a lifetime moments perfectly frozen in time for someone to treasure.

And when Dawn and I thought about photographers that have touched our lives, the list started to grow rapidly. Names included photographers we started to love when we were ten years younger like James Cassimus and Trevor Graves, Shem Roose and Jesse Loomis, to talented photographers we’ve just gotten to see more of in the past few years: Susie Floros, Ryan Boyes, Kealan Shilling and Ryan “Huggy” Hughes. We asked everyone to help us recommend more people and we eventually came up with a substantial list of friends and community members who have made an impact on snowboarding.

With the help of Amber Lussier we started to contact everyone we could, and even though each and every photographer was super busy with traveling and working and life they all loved the idea and wanted to contribute. They looked at the list of names and felt honored to be part of this amazing group of people. And because of this, the list started to grow. We even had a few people who wanted to be added at the last minute: Cole Barash, Mammoth locals Matt and Peter Morning, and German photographer Christian Brecheis.

Even though there was a tight deadline, with each package of photos that came in and was opened we knew this was going to be a special show. And the energy was contagious. We were very fortunate to have the help of lighting expert and all around amazing guy John Scobie who donated his time to us. It was with his help that we took an old snowboard shop and turned it into a modern gallery. Tim Gallagher from Wave Rave came through as we were starting to hang photos and gladly loaned us the use of his snowboard collection. Each board meaningful, matching a turning point in snowboard history that the photographs portrayed. Curtis, Fred Tiblin, and Morgan and Odin loaned us tools and helped us hang.

From inception, part of our plan for this photography show was to try and get as many people from the community of Mammoth to come out. We wanted everyone to feel included and welcome. Dawn True played an instrumental role in getting local businesses involved with our community preview/reception. The Shadow Ranch vineyard and winery provided us with wine for the evening, and the Side Door Café served hors d’oeuvres. Sierra Sundance Earth products gave us necessary supplies and Catherine from The Mammoth Times wrote a wonderful story which ran that Thursday. We had a few hundred people who came through the gallery, and many locals dug deep in their pockets and walked away with a special photo that they will love forever.

Friday we took as a day off, only giving private viewings to select people. But that evening Phil, Matt and Keir from FUEL TV came in and kindly interviewed Dawn and I as well as local photographers Mark and Matt Clausen, Peter Morning, and Ryan Boyes. We want to thank them for helping us highlight the work of all the photographers involved with Still Life with snow. It’s not very easy talking on camera, but those three are very professional and fun to be around.

Saturday was our publicized opening. The big night for Still Life with Snow. And it rained all day. But that didn’t stop people from coming into the gallery to support before watching the WCI rail jam. Danny Zapalac and his wife Lyndsey drove up from Long Beach, Ryan Boyes came in with Billy, Sarah and Spencer Anderson. Annie Fast and the good folks from TW, Pat Bridges, John Stouffer, Jeff, Lily and Mika Baker (Levi’s new BFF), Lucky Lopez, Brad Farmer, the whole Vans crew, the whole 32 crew, everyone from Wave Rave, Oren Tanzer, Michelle Tomaier, Rusty Gregory, and many many more that we would like to thank for being a part of the first Still Life with.

Thank you again to every photographer who helped to make this happen. This show was only a success because of the hard work and dedication that you have given to snowboarding. And thank you to our good friends in the media who helped us spread the word. By the end of the weekend we sold over $4k of photographs and we couldn’t have done it without you.
